Goodman Error Code F01: Goodman Code F01 - Ignition Lockout
How to Fix Goodman Code F01
- Step 1: Shut off the gas supply to the furnace at the gas shut-off valve, usually located on the gas pipe near the furnace.
- Step 2: Turn off the furnace power at the breaker.
- Step 3: Call a qualified HVAC technician to inspect and repair the furnace. Do not attempt to troubleshoot gas or electrical components yourself.
How to Reset Goodman Code F01
- Turn off the furnace power switch, usually located on or near the unit.
- Turn off the circuit breaker for the furnace. Wait 30 seconds.
- Restore power at the breaker and flip the furnace switch back on.
- Set the thermostat to call for heat. If the error code returns after 2-3 ignition attempts, the fault requires repair.
Resetting clears the code from the display but does not fix the underlying fault. If the code returns after reset, proceed to the diagnostic steps above.
What Does Goodman Error Code F01 Mean?
The F01 error code on your Goodman furnace indicates an 'Ignition Lockout'. This means the furnace attempted to light the burners multiple times but failed. After several failed attempts, the furnace control board locks out the system as a safety measure. This lockout prevents the continuous flow of gas into the combustion chamber, which could create a dangerous situation. The system affected is primarily the gas ignition system, including the gas valve, igniter, flame sensor, and the furnace control board itself. A furnace that cannot ignite properly will not provide heat, and more importantly, could leak unburnt gas into your home.
Common Causes
- Failed or weak igniter (hot surface igniter or spark igniter)
- Faulty gas valve not opening to allow gas flow
- Flame sensor not detecting flame, even if ignition occurs
- Blocked or restricted gas supply to the furnace
- Defective furnace control board
Diagnostic Steps
| If... | Check | Expected |
|---|---|---|
| Furnace is in lockout and igniter is not glowing | Measure voltage to the igniter during start-up | 120 VAC |
| Igniter glows but flame is not detected | Measure flame sensor microamps (uA) during burner operation | 2-10 uA DC |
| Gas valve does not open during start-up | Measure voltage to the gas valve during start-up | 24 VAC |
| Gas pressure is suspected to be low | Measure gas pressure at the gas valve with a manometer | Typically 3.5-4.0" WC (inches of water column) |
